Environmental Sustainability Project

For my project i intend on implementing a few different things to help our childcare centre be more environmentally sustainable. I know it is something that a lot of staff at our centre are passionate about and with a bit of help, some extra resources and some time we can work together to make it happen. We have already made some small changes by adding small recylcing bins to every room which allow the children to get involved and start thinking about what they throw in the bin and what can and should be recycled. We already try to turn off appliances at the switch when they arent being used and staff are being more mindful of turning off heating when doors are open or when everyone is outside. Recently our garbage disposal unit has died and our director has decided that it doesnt fit in with out vision of becoming environmentally sustainable so we arent going to get it replaced. I would like to implement a worm farm which will work in well as compost for our garden patches that the children use. I will also evaulate it and see if corn starch bags would be useful to complement this and take some of the excess food scraps that is too much for the worms. But i will need to look into costing because it would also mean puchasing a green waste curbside bin because the centre doesnt already have one. I would also like to get the centre to look into a rain water tank for the future and i will provide them with grant information to help them look into it.

Another project that Tess and i will be doing together is organising a swap night at the centre on Monday the 5th of July for parents and their friends to bring any unwanted items for them to trade with each other. I hope that with the right planing people will get involved and it will be sucessful. We will also make it a gold coin donation so that the centre is getting some fundraising as well.

So to start my project today i went into bunnings after tafe and looked at how much a real worm farm will cost. They have a good one for $72 so tomorrow at work ill ask our director if the centre would be prepared to pay for one and i will start it up and running. If not i will make one myself out of recyled materials.
