day two

Today i spent the day with the kindy kids. We had a wonderful time exploring our natural world. I had prepared for the day by collecting a variety of leaves, bark, gumnuts and sticks for us to make natural collages. The children also had fun collecting some more from their play yard. They were all very excited and i left them to have full creative control of their artwork, they all produced wonderfully unique artwork that they were proud of. When we were playing out in the yard i showed a couple of interested children how you can make rubbings on trees. After a few minutes we had a lot of other curious children who joined in. We talked about how the tree feels and why the pattern comes through on the paper. We also spoke about how paper is made from trees and why it is important not to waste paper and to recycle it when we have finished. Some children then progressed to making rubbings of other things in the world around them such as their bikes and the path.
After coming back inside we used the leaves we had left over from our collage to make leaf rubbings. The children were familiar with the technique from the tree rubbings. I made it easier by taping down the leaves to the table and taping their paper down on top. Some children decided to trace the leaves or colour them in.

I spoke to my director about the worm farm and she was very happy to pay for it and for it to go ahead. I went to bunnings today and purchased a can-o-worms worm farm. We also spoke about where to put it and discussed it needing a fence around it but still needing to be accessable for the children. After a couple of days we decided to put it out the back behind the nursery which is accessable by a side gate so it is out of the main play area but staff can still take a small group of children out to it. It will also be easy for the cook to reach from the kitchen. My director also spoke about the need to create a policy and proceedure to go with the worm farm which i have begun to investigate. I have also had a few offers for some free worms from other peoples worm farms which that along with our decision not to make a whole new fenced area for the worm farm are saving the centre money.
